HOW IT WORKS
E.S Solutions Cloud Data Services is an ideal remote backup solution for individuals as well as corporate users, offering a cost-effective way to quickly and easily backup files of any type and size to any machine running a variety of operating systems.
Security
Privacy
One of the biggest challenge faced by companies using service-based online backups is privacy. E.S Solutions Data Services allow you to create a private PASSWORD during the initial setup on your company’s database server.Your data is protected in the cloud with strong password protection and backend infrastructure such as firewalls.
SSL and HTTPS
HTTPS ensures the communication channel between client and server is secure. Actual file transfers as well as any administrative task can be optionally encrypted using SSL. A self-signed SSL certificate comes bundled with the product that gets you up and running within minutes.
Encryption
While HTTPS ensures a secure communication channel, encryption prevents unauthorized access to the files once they are copied on the server. ESS Cloud Data Services uses strong AES encryption to protect files, which can only be accessed with a password key.
Using encryption while backing up files
When files are encrypted they cannot be seen/opened by anyone unless they know the password that was used to encrypt it.
It is important you read this article in its entirety before using this feature.
Encrypting files has its pros and cons. The benefit is obvious: the only reason you would want to encrypt any file is to prevent non-authorized users from accessing it.
Below are some disadvantages of using this features.
-
Lost password - You will NOT be able to recover your file from backup if you forget the password. ESS backup application uses 128 bit strong (AES) Advanced Encryption Standard encryption to encrypt files. This type of encryption can take years even for a computer to guess a password.
-
Entire backup - Every file from your local machine gets copied again if you
-
change your password
-
switch from encrypted to unencrypted mode or
-
unencrypted to encrypted mode.
-
-
Restore - ESS backup application will be able the client to restore files without any extra steps. However, if you use the browser to download a file from the server, you will have to manually decrypt it using ESS backup application client version.
How to use encryption
To use encryption simply click on the encryption tab, select the option for encryption and specify a password. The password cannot be more than 16 characters long. Refer to the image below.
Encryption tool in ESS backup application client
For your convenience, ESS backup application client includes a tool that can be used to encrypt/decrypt files on demand. Click Encrypt/Decrypt files from the Tools menu. This opens the following screen.
This screen is used to either encrypt/decrypt a single file or every file in a folder. When Include sub-folders is checked, files will be included recursively.
IMPORTANT: This tool does not change the file name when it is either encrypted or decrypted.
User accounts
Every user is associated with a user Id and password. Administrators can monitor who connects to the server in real-time.
Design Benefits
HTTP
Data is transferred using HTTP(S)Hypertext Transfer Protoco, which is a firewall-friendly protocol. Most companies allow out-bound HTTP traffic allowing E.S Solutions Data Services to run seamlessly without any additional configuration in the corporate firewall.
Incremental backup
ESS Cloud Data Services copies the part of file that is different between source and target allowing network administrators to backup gigabytes of data every day without sacrificing network bandwidth.
Email notifications
A backup log is sent via email to the user containing a list of files that were backed up every day.
Scheduling
E.S Solutions Data Services is seamlessly integrated with Windows Scheduler on Windows operating system.
Access files from anywhere
Users can view or download their backed up files on ESS Cloud Data Service Server from any internet connected computer using just a web browser. Files are even accessible from mobile devices such as cell phones and tablet.
